Travel with train in Denmark (DSB) with your dog for free
Is your dog a smaller dog who can fit into a RIO dog bag? If the answer is "yes" then your dog can travel for free on trains in Denmark. It is a prerequisite though that your dog stays inside the RIO dog bag for the entire journey. All of your dog's paws must be inside the RIO dog bag during travel. The RIO dog bag must be placed under or above your seat, on your lap or in areas designated for luggage.
In DSB's long-distance and regional trains as well as in S-trains there are pictograms indicating the areas where you can bring your dog, even if your dog is in a RIO dog bag. Note that the quiet zones in both DSB's long-distance and regional trains as well as in S-trains are always pet-free areas. Likewise, family zones and DSB 1' are pet-free zones.
If you are travelling with two small dogs, both dogs must stay in the same dog bag for the entire journey in order to travel for free. A dog bag can be maximum 100 x 60 x 30 cm. If only one of your two small dogs stays in the dog bag during the journey, you must purchase a child ticket for the other small dog. The small dog that is outside of the dog bag must be on a leash, and must stay on the floor for the entire journey.
If you are travelling with a large dog, you must also purchase a child ticket (12-15 years) for it. You can only bring one large dog, and it must be kept on a leash and also on the floor for the entire journey.
Travelling by bus or metro with dogs in Denmark
If your dog can fit in a RIO dog bag and stays inside the RIO dog bag during the bus and/or metro ride, you can bring your dog for free.
If your dog is too big to fit in a dog bag, you must purchase a child ticket for the dog.
Dogs that are not in a dog bag are generally not allowed on A-buses. However, this does not apply to A-buses in Køge, Roskilde, Næstved, Ringsted and Holbæk and Helsingør.
Larger dogs are not allowed on buses in Greater Copenhagen on weekdays between 7:00 - 9:00 and again between 15:30 - 17:30.
The front half of all buses is a pet-free zone.
You can bring a maximum of one large dog and one small dog that is in a dog bag on buses and/or the metro.
For good measure, we recommend you double check the guidelines with Public Transportation and DSB before travelling and wish you a nice trip.
DSB recommends that you purchase a seat ticket for your dog that does not stay in a bag during travel, when travelling with InterCity or InterCityLyn, so that you can ensure there is room for the dog on the floor in front of the seat.
