A Holiday Trip with Your Dog(s)

A Holiday Trip with Your Dog(s)

The holiday season is about creating magical memories, and bringing your dog along for the Christmas trip can make this time even more special. However, if you rarely travel with dog(s), it is natural to feel a mix of excitement and apprehension. Will your dog(s) handle the travel well? How will they adapt to new environments? What if they become overwhelmed by the hustle of the holiday season?

Below we share our own experiences on preparation and approach, which has helped us transform potential challenges into opportunities for bonding and joy.

Preparing for Change and Managing Travel Anxiety

For dog(s), unfamiliar surroundings can be as. stimulating as they are unsettling. The sounds and scents of a car ride or train journey may leave them feeling uneasy. To help ease their transition, bring along familiar items from home. A favorite blanket, a beloved toy, a bag, or even their bed (if this is possible to bring) can provide comfort in an unfamiliar setting.

Think of packing for your dog like preparing for a toddler. Along with the basics such as food, a leash and waste bags, include items to address their emotional well-being. A water bottle for hydration on the go, a treat bag full of their favorite treats and a cozy wool sweater or coat for colder climates can make a big difference in keeping your dog(s) comfortable.

Practice Makes Perfect

Your dog(s)'s experience during the journey can set the tone for the entire trip. Some dogs are natural travelers, while others may feel restless or stressed. To reduce anxiety, take practice trips in the weeks leading up to your holiday travels. Short car rides or test runs in a train can help your dog acclimate to the new experience.

Make these practice sessions enjoyable by pairing them with treats, praise, and playtime upon arrival. This positive reinforcement will help your dog associate travel with good things, making the actual trip less daunting.
